Hey everybody

My 14 gallon FOWLR tank has a problem. It has acquired an amazing amount of what it think to be brown algae. It first appeared on the rock, but my snails are taking care of that. There was a little brown patch on the sand so i rustled the gravel to turn the nasty looking sand over. This was yesterday. Today, there are brown patches all over the tank. I have one scarlet reef crab that is eating some but he cannot control it all. Anybody know what this is? Suggestions on control?

Thank you.

P.S. there are no fish right now

Did you just finish cycling the tank or has it been up and running for awhile? If is was just recently cycled, it is probably a diatom bloom.

i just started it about 2 weeks ago. I have no amonia, nitrite, or nitrate, so im not cycling. If it were a diatom bloom, how do i control it?

Buy getting an appropriate clean up crew. You may need to add a crab or two more, and some other cleaners that are going to turn over the substrate. Snails like Ceriths, Nassarius etc. Diatoms is something that all tanks go through and it will eventually go away but you also need to do that fine line balance with your clean up crew.. Not to many and not to few. :D
