Hi everyone.

I have recently been getting heaps of brown algae in my 50g reef. It is about 6 months old and i have all the usual snails, a foxface and a sea cucumber. Is it a phase of the first months or is something wrong. My nitrate is 5, and i have not done a water change for 9 days. doing one in a few days though. even when i change water before, the algae dosn't do away.

any help is greatly appreciated

i get my water from the sea so I supose that it could be a higher phosphate level in the sea than normal, but i have been getting it from there for 6 months, the whole time i have had the tank. same lighting and same temp. When I think about it I suppose it is probebly the water from the ocean, there could have been alot of seaweed there just that day so the phosphates were higher or something.

It's been my experience that algae stages are numerous until the tank reaches a mature state, usually in the year to 1 1/2 year point.
Be sure you're not overfeeding, that you're doing proper water changes weekly for now, and blow the algae off the rocks with a powerhead so you can siphon it up when doing these water changes.
