Brown Algae

Plecos love it too (at least mine does). Of course, you need to have a pretty big tank for most plecs.

When I had some brown algae in my tank, a bought a few otocinclus catfish and they loved the stuff! They had it under control after a few days - including what was on the rocks, gravel, glass, plants, and decorations. You don't need too many to do the job. When they have eaten all the brown algae, however, you have to supplement their diet with algae tablets.

They are cute little guys that may hide on you during the day, but can sometimes be seen sitting on a rock or a plant leaf. They seem to do most of their algae eating at night, at least for me.

My 20gal had alot of algae initially so I added 3 oto cats (the tank was fully cycled, fishless of course!). They had that tank spic and span in less than two days. I supplement their diet with blanched veggies. I guess I'm lucky, my otos aren't shy at all. They're always hanging on the glass at the front of my tank or swimming around and playing. I love those little guys!

I just clean what I see and then do a water change. Yes, if Otos fit your final stocking plan they are an excellent solution, but if not then it's not a good idea to add them.

Stick with the cleaning and water changes and it will go away on its own. Yeah, you can wait it out it's the same thing with less work, but water changes are free and a good thing, and it keeps the tank looking a little nicer as you wait it out.
