Brown Algae

I wouldn't add otos to a tank that isn't completely cycled. I'd really wait until its matured a bit more, maybe 3 months old or so. Unless you used established media.

Otos don't really do well in a new tank. If you do decide to add otos be very careful acclimating them. I took twice the usual time acclimating mine and only lost 1. I floated the bag for an half hour and then added about half cup of tank water every 30 minutes after doing this 3 times I adding a full cup of tank water every 30 minutes 2 times. After 30 minutes I added them to the tank.

They really do prefer an established tank though.

Ok. Thanks for the info on otos. I think I am going to get 2 bristlenose plecos if I can find them. I want to get some that will not outgrow my tank.

Ok, I'll do that. I hope my LPS know what they have in stock..too many teenage kids work there that are clueless.

Lisa,

rrkss is correct. The brown algae will go away on its own. Instead of stocking more fish, why not just wait and see? That way you'll have more room later to stock fish you really want, instead of stocking fish just to take care of a problem that will eventually take care of itself.

To be honest I was waiting for my tank to finish cycling so I could get a pleco. I didn't know what kind I wanted though. I would have gotten the otos to take care of the brown algae, but I really was not interested in them. I had a pleco in my fish tank when I was a teenager and I just loved it. Now that I have an aquarium again I can't wait to get one..or two.

Cool ;)

Just make sure you get a pleco that stays small and not a common pleco or one that will grow 12+ inches.

Yup. That is why I was thinking of the bristlenose..and if I can't get one here, I'll see if I can can a clown..any other suggestions? :dive:

I've got a Candy Striped pleco, L015, in my 75g. Actually, he's a travelling pleco that we move from tank to tank :)

He *does* eat algae, contrary to what Planet Catfish says, which is why he's a travelling man. He's pretty fat right now cause I had a real bad algae infestation in that 75. He single-handedly cleaned up a large piece of driftwood in two days. Was quite an acheivement for a little guy.

Max size is 4" and I like this guy a lot. He's VERY shy, though, and you don't get to see him a lot, but he's cool.

Thanks. I'm writing all this down...I'll never remember all these names. I just hope I can find at least one type of pleco that have been mentioned at the LPS.
