Hi i have not long had a puffer fish and he has been getting brown gung in the tank, on the glass on the rock on the gravel and i am having to clean it about 3 times a week. I started having the light on for about 6 hours a day but a slowly reduced it to about 4.5 as i wondered if it was the light causing the algae ( as i predume its that ) but then i thought that only green algae was caused by lighting. Help how do i stop this . :rant2:

bown algae. usually will go away on it's own. what type of puffer do you have? how big is the tank?

Its a figure 8 puffer and it about a 10 gal just over i think. What do you mean it will go away on its own, it just seems to be building up thicker and then i have to wash it off coz it looks horrib;e

Turn off your lights for a week or so......

Brown algae is normal for a newly established tank. It usually goes away on its own. It can take awhile, but it's not permanent.

Turning the lights off, IMO, won't help much. You'd have to black out the tank for 3-4 days to get rid of it.

Thanks for you help, i understand now, do get these one word answers. So am i ok to keep cleaning the rocks and stuff for it to clear its self up. Is there anything i can do if it doesn't clear itself up, thanks again
