Brown Gunk?

Is the brown gunk on my filter actually providing anything to the tank? Or should I clean it off? The inside of the intake has it as well as where the water flows out it's there. Is it algae or just useless gunk? It's real slimy, but only about 2mm thick.
 
It's likely algae--could be a thick layer of bacteria, as well. You can remove it without any concern, though. Cleaning out the intake is a good idea--too much build up can reduce your flow rates.
 
OK, thanks. I didn't want to clean it up if it was doing something really beneficial, and then have my tank go all crazy. I am seeing a little rise in the nitrites and nitrates, must likely from not using Prime for the last few days. I haven't used it now for 3 days, and my tank is still cycling.
