Brown/red stuff on the water surface

Hi, can you help? I'm getting brown/red stuff (algae?) on the water surface or my marine tank that I have to periodically skim off. I can never quite get rid of it all and it's back with avengence within a week or two. Any idea what it is and how to get rid of it?

It sounds to me like you dont have enough agitation at the water surface. Do you have any powerheads or filter returns aimed in the direction of the surface?

Hi, yes I have 2 powerheads (900 lph) that both break up the surface of the water. I can see swirls of the the brown/red stuff moving accross the surface quite quickly.

Is there any chance you could switch off the water flow in the tank, let it settle for a few mins and then take a photo of it?
