I think I have had these for about 3 months in a low light tank they seem to be growing alright and there is a lot of new leaves growing up from the center. At the time I planted them I was using API Leaf Zone as directed. I started to get brown spots and changed to root tabs. I was a little cheep with the tabs so I add a bit of the leaf zone every once in a while. I also recently have started using the Flourish Excel organic carbon. But that has been only after I got the brown spots. All other plants seem to be doing ok. Is this a natural thing that happens to older leaves on the plant or am I causing it with the ferts.? Also I have a large albino Chinese algae eater . Could he be damaging the surfaces of the leaves with his sucking? I'm going to try an add photos. Thanks in advance for any help.

Those are older leaves right? Swords are fast growers. They need a lot of nitrogen to keep them growing strongly. When they are short of nitrogen they disassemble the relocate the nitrogen to the newest leaves and then let the older leaves die.

The flourish excel increases the speed that the plant grow by making more carbon available. This makes any shortage of N appear quicker. So... purchase some dry fert's online and look at the Tom Barr's EI dosing of plants. Just like you feed your fish you need to feed your plants as well.

BINGO!! Spot on.

Nutrient deficiency is the issue. KNO3 is low. But with that I would add...... Along with Dry ferts and the EI program, Swords are heavy root feeders. They need a good substrate food. Use Root tabs as well pushed into the substrate right below or next to the Sword. Give it a week after doing this and it should also make a difference.
