Brown Stems/Leaves

My bad with the calcium. what i purchased was not Ca2++ but CaCO3 which also full of binders and crap, so i have stopped that. having a very low ability to dissolve in water, all i am putting in my tank is the crap.

any suggestions on putting calcium in a tank?

i know Calcium nitrate is very soluble in water, and since i dont need much calcium, perhaps i can deal with the nitrate.

We use calcium chloride to up the calcium. I was told that some commercial de-icers for winter are calcium chloride, but I personally wouldn't put industrial grade de-icer in my tank. We get our calcium chloride from a chemical supply house. If you search around the web, you'll find some companies and you can compare prices.

Jared - I believe you are right! I was doing a little re-reading - from some BOOKS (can you believe) that I’ve had for months, and I too am convinced that light is the problem. I’ll have to contact AHsupply to see if they have a reflector that I can fit 6 96 watt bulbs on to. I will then order 2 more (I have 4 now), and I think that will go a long way to solving my problem.

Darren, I’ve often wondered about Calcium myself, as no one until now has made much mention of dosing it. Is it because tap water generally has enough Calcium in it that we don’t dose it? I don’t know. My hardness went up from dosing Magnesium, I’m going to stop and let it go back down. Since you’ve got a ton of light on your tank, I’d take a closer look at your CO2. I had a diffuser in my tank initially, and I couldn’t get the pH any lower than the way it came out of the tap (around 7.4). Then I got the reactor and it works so much better, you can virtually make the pH anything you want. I think I paid like 60 bucks for the thing, I think its worth every penny. Check it out!

Good luck - and stay tuned....
