I recently started noticing that my tank near the window has a brownish type algae on the glass(acrylic)...and on the plastic plants too...what type of algae is this?
Also is this type of algae contagious like if I put another new plastic plant/or live plant in there and then transfer it to another tank will it spread to the other tank?

Brown algae:
Forms in soft brown clumpy patches. In the freshwater aquarium, these are usually diatoms. Usually indicates a lack of light or an excess of silicates. Increased light levels will usually make it disappear. Easily removed by wiping the glass or siphon vacuuming the affected area.

the thing is, my tank also has brown algea. I have to take out all decorations once a month to clean them, and my plastic plants. my tank has a lot of light. how does one get rid of the silicates?

Mine too

I have my tank right next to the window(away from direct sun) and I still have these brown stuff...all these years I haven't gotten any type of algae before...I noticed it when my plastic plants were brown...
I also have a jar with some gravel and some Moss balls in it in front of the window..so its getting a lot of light but the insides of the jar is getting the brown stuff too...could it be the water? I though moss balls were suppose to use up any nutrients needed by other algae..
