I have had my 10G tank almost running for about 7 weeks now. I resently noticed that one of portion of my white sand has a brownish tint to it and that one or two of the white spots on my rock have also devloped this color. Is this normal? My fish seems happy and healthy, but I want to prevent any potential dangers before it escalates if it is a problem.

diatoms
they are very common in new tanks and will bloom in ones with high nutrient levels, especialy silicates.
in time, with proper managment, they shoudl go away.

Heh, I just came to the same conclusion by myself when I was looking at a couple of post from that nice nanotank forum. Thanks for confirming it for me. So I shouldn't have to change my regular PWC schedule? I have been doing 10% every 4 days. Should I increase that, slow it down or keep that constant?

that's pretty good if you have the time to do it.

Thanks. I don't mind doing it. I actually prefer cleaning my SW tank over my FW tank. My FW tank seems to take forever to do a PWC and I have to keep an eye on all the trouble making fishes. One will try to jump out. My loach will constantly bump my hand thinking I have food and my minnows like to try to sneak into the bucket.
