maybe wison was poking holes in it to get bigger bubbles. which is a lot like the effect you get if you bury it under gravel. only you have to bury it under a LOT of gravel. a good couple of inches.
AT $24 I'd say its worth it to try some aquarium silicone and then Deep burial.
