My bf has recently attracted some fleas somehow  and he wants to put off a bug bomb in the room to get rid of them. What should I do to keep the fish safe? Cover the tank openings with a towel or something?
Be sure to seal it off completly. Any chemicals could really cause damage. Be sure to air out the room as best you can before uncovering your tank. Even better, don't chance it and look into other options. There might be other ways to irradicate the pests. Good luck with the fleas, they really suck.
I would agree that if there is no other option, seal the tank as best possible with wet towels...i believe we answered this on WWM, will see if i can find the FAQ....
What I have used in the past and it worked astoundingly well was:
You take a large glass baking pan with sides not too high. Put in 1/2" of water and a drop of dish soap. Put some sort of incandescent light bulb directly over the middle of the pan.
Fleas target their prey with heat sensors. Their prey is always warmer than the surroundings. They keep hoping towards any heat the 'see' until they reach prey. They will seek out the light bulb since it is a beacon in the room. Eventually they land in the water while trying to hit the bulb. They can't swim at all, which leads to their rapid demise. You will find the pan loaded with your erstwhile roommates. Poison free.
do what kcress said and if that does not work try one of those pest strips that is heated with a light and if that does not work seal up the tank like the others have said and the second you take the seal off put activated carbon in the filter and better yet if the tank is small enough just move it out of the room
When My 210 was set up at my parents house years ago, they had the same problem once. My dad wrapped the tank in plastic and put a fan into the "tent" that was sucking air from a nearby window. This pressurized the tent and kept any airborne bug killer from getting into the tank. It worked amazingly well....didn't harm the tank's inhabitants at all.
Hope this helps...

Also, if you have pets and you put a flea gel (prescription) on their neck, all of the fleas in your house will be dead in 48 hours with no risk to your tank. Unless your pet goes swimming.
