So this is my first go at a tank like this. I have not set up this type of filter so I am hoping someone will accept my challenge to help me build this filter.

If you have any experience with a filter like this please put these images into paint (or whatever image editor you want) and indicate what should go where. This will really help me out. I have a pretty good idea what to do but if someone knows for sure and is willing to make a diagram for me it will speed up my process. Thanks!

P.S. This will be a freshwater setup (heavily planted) This is a 75 gallon tank with the filter build into the back. I may be getting a 150 gallon version of this tank that maybe saltwater (I would like to secure the tank before I think about it too much) so please indicate if your diagram is for salt or freshwater setups. Thanks again!

Yeah it automatically overflows from the aquarium -> through the filter -> back to the tank. I plan on putting an inline UV or Ozone after the pump before going back into the tank.

What do you think of this? Where do bio balls go? (top or bottom?) Where would you put floss? Where would you introduce CO2? Thanks!

so water flows in from the left? i would add bigger amount of foam then maybe a finer foam in the next slot. you could put bio balls or pot scrubbers there and floss on the bottom. with a over flow a lot of co2 will be gassed off. i would put the co2 going into the pump pumping the water back in.

I am considering putting the pump on a timer to only run at night (when there is no feeding going on (to avoid food just floating straight to the overflow and into the filter) and when no CO2 is being introduced (I will only introduce it while the lights are on) What do you think?

you know those light switch timers. where you turn it so it turns the lights on for like 10-15 mins? well SoCalDiscus did something for that for his but the opposite. it would stay on then turn the timer so it goes off for 5 mins or so and feed the fish. good way so you dont forget about it like i would. timer for the co2 going off and on with the lights is also a great idea.

That thing makes me nervous.

I guess my main concern, from guessing how the water lvls everywhere are going(supposed) to be.

Is that, your going to be required to keep the water toped off at all times. To keep it working properly???

Maybe I'm not seeing things right. ?

How tall/deep are the slots for the incomming water?

And is the top of this thing, even or below the top of the tank?

There is a skimmer that is the main inlet at the top of the water level. There are also holes from tank into the filter towards the bottom of the tank so that if for some reason (water changes?) the water falls below the skimmer inlet the filter will still have sufficient water flow to work properly. Keeping a tank topped off usually isn't that hard for me (I will probably top off directly from tap when not doing water changes) but you are correct, if that was the only way to get water into the filter it would be cause for concern.
