Need some help please. I am building a canopy for my 44 gallon Corner (hex) tank. I am going to put MH lights in it. Anybody built one and have plans or give me some ideas. Also, how far off the water does the lights need to be? Also, do I need to get a glass hood for this tank? Thanks

MHs are usually kept 8" - 12" off the top of the water. If you are going to supplement with some kind of fluorescent actinics, you would ideally want them to be closer to the water than the MH, more in the 4" range.

You really should consider some kind of glass shield for your MH. The bulbs burn pretty hot and any water splashed on them can lead to a disaster. You wouldn't necessarily need a full glass top, but something to at least protect the MH bulb(s) themselves. If you add in fluorescent actinics, you may want to protect them some, also, but that is up to you.
