So I have plate glass from old windows & I wanted to use them to make a tank. My 20gal long has 2-2.5ML thick glass, but the glass I am using would be just 1.5-2ML thick. Glass is about 6in high & 12-16in long.
I wanted to use long pieces if I can find enough of them, if not, I would like to mix them so it's more of a rectangle than square.
The silicone is the stuff you find in stores, Silicone 1, would this work?
Would the glass be thick enough?
:1zhelp:

silicone II for windows and doors is just fine. it doesn't "have" the mold inhibitor in it.

that thickness should be fine if the tank is only going to be 6" tall.

Wait, what? Are you sure? It says "provides mold free product protection" on the back, whereas silicone 1 doesn't say that. Now that COULD be just talking about how if you silicone something the water won't leak through it and cause mold, I can't tell.

But all the fish I put in my silicone 2 tank died. Of course that could've just been my ineptitude with setting up a QT tank properly.

Either way, I'll only be using Silicone I.
Still wondering if the tank will hold together...

there are different kinds of silicon II. the "windows and doors" is supposed to be safe (haven't used it so I can't confirm or deny this)

and to the op the glass should be fine what are you planning on putting in such a shallow tank?

Did some actual measuring.
20in by 8in, I have 3 of these right now, but I can get more.
12in by 8in, 4 of these, but again, I can go out and get more from the old windows outside.
I will have to cut glass for the sides, any ideas on how to do that? Maybe I can find a bottom pane big enough for the sides to fit w/o cutting.
