Building a three tier tank stand.

Most dimensional lumber used for construction is softwood - spruce, pine, doug. fir. Do you know what kind of wood specifically you have?

At 8 pounds per gallon of water, you might want to check the rating on those shelves -- especially for the 37 gallon. Even assuming just half-full of water, that's close to 160 pounds on that one shelf.

I have a couple of those $40 Menards shelving units, too. I don't remember them being rated for anything close to 160 pounds per shelf; I thought they were at least 50 pounds per shelf and at most 100 pounds per shelf. Maybe, I'm thinking of a different set of shelves.

300# per shelf..
evenly distributed of corse.. I have no idea what my floor is rated though!!

The thing to remember is that the 8 lbs per gallon is just the water itself. By the time you factor in the weight of the tank, the gravel, decorations and even the fish (yes, they have weight too) you're probably closer to 10-12 lbs per gallon. I work with the 12 lbs per gallon number myself just to stay on the safe side.

2x4's will be fine

The one question I have to ask is, are you down with climbing on a ladder everytime you have to go into the top tank? You're looking at 72+" for final height. If you've got the space and don't mind needing a ladder, that design looks pretty good.
Climbing a ladder isn't a problem, i have to do that everytime i clean my 180g anyway.

Well i've been itching to get on with this project and post some pic's of how it's been going. Unfortunately i have been doing long hours at work recently so haven't got very far with it, all i have done up till now is cut the wood and sanded it down.
The plan has changed from the original idea i posted, the 32g will now be on the top shelf so i will have a cupboard at the bottom to house the filters for the 35g and the 32g the 20g will have internal filters.

I have included this pic of the wood i've cut because i wanted to show you all that this project is moving forward even if it has been slow progress so far.

So far i have put the shelves together and the bottom pair of legs.

We'll if you decide that you don't want to use it as a tank stand, you could always use it to prop up your vehicle when working on it. That stand is gonna be pretty bulletproof IMHO.

nice , but too complex and expensive for me. college has taught me frugality. i would use cinder blocks and 2x4s.

even still, i like your stand anyway. it looks very strong!
