Building Custom Slate Walls/Caves

Just went and picked up a 10oz tube of GE Silicone I for $4.47 at a local hardware store.

They had several other 100% silicone brands with no mold inhibitors just like GE Silicone I, including DAP.

I was told the silicone is harmless to the fish, even if it has only cured for a few hours, it'll just lose it's holding strength/sealing capabilities if it isn't allowed to cure for 24 hours.

yee thats what i meant by letting it fully dry/cure for atleast 3 days
Now get to work!!

The slate wall/caves are built and fully siliconed!

Very sturdy, I built an 11 inch tall strucle to cover the back of the tank and cover with Java moss.

I will post pictures! I tried to build a decent corner piece, but for some reason the creative part of my brain was taking a snooze at the moment and I made a horribly ugly corner piece. I'll post a picture of that too when I have it in the tank!

I was hoping to be able to stand pieces of slate and build something different, but it would take hours to smooth the ends of the slate without a wet saw to get good contact to silicone in place. Faaaaaaaar too lazy to do such a thing.

I just stacked some slate in the tank about a week ago and within 10 minutes of being in the tank, the guppies and long finned danios were going bananas investigating. Should be interesting to watch the tank now!

I was just about to post asking how to DIY some caves, so make with the pics :)

I'll post some pics around 5:30PM ET.

I forgot to mention, I took the Java moss and twisted a good amount to be like a string & I fluffed out the ball of moss at the end, I attached the twisted part of the moss to a piece of slate in the tank now and it floats around like it is a balloon...it's interesting haha!
