Building tank around Blood Parrots.....need help stocking!

So me and my wife are out one day and I wanted to stop in to a LFS to see what they've got in stock, we pass a tank with (hybrid)Blood Parrots in it, and instantly my wife falls in love with them. I explain to her, what little she knows about the aquatic hobby, that those fish are man made; you know not natural. She replies, I don't care I want those. So here's my dilemma, I really don't know much about these fish. I have an empty 55 gallon being cycled right now. I want to build this tank around the Blood Parrot(3 or 4 of them). What are some suggestions for other inhabitants?
Show your wife some other choices.:) It never hurts to try again until you succeed in convincing her there are plenty other fish prettier than the blood parrots.

Building a tank around BP

A few years ago, my husband and I started out much like you and your wife. We bought 5 blood parrots for a 55g tank. After about 8 months, we noticed one BP was much smaller than the rest. We gave him to a friend to keep because we were afraid he was too small to compete with the other 4. After about 15 months, two parrots paired up and laid eggs, one seemed oblivious to the world, and one seemed to take up one side of the tank all by himself!

Long story short, right now only two of the four are still together. One is so agressive that he is all alone. The other one is in the original 55 with large agressive angels and they stand their ground with her.

I personally love BPs, but when people talk about how unpredictable they are...they aren't kidding. It could only take a few months, or it can take a couple of years for the agression to show, but it will show. The funny thing is that they are so clumsy and akward it's amusing to watch them try to barrel through things knowing they can't really hurt it!

Good luck whatever you decide!

Various tankmates I have had with parrots include:

Angelfish
Severum
Rainbowfish
Tiger Barbs
Neons
Rosey Barbs
Mollies
Cory Cats
Pictus Cat
Bumblebee Cats

I just put 2 BP's in my 55. I think they're great. There's another green parrot. 2 jack dempsey's, a small pleco and a couple of other SA cichlids and a cory. The cory is an experiment, to see if they can get along. If the cichlids are mean, I'll put the cory back in my 29 community tank.

Later,
Dave

no angels with dempseys.

it really sounds like you have too many fish in there. two full grown parrots are enough for a 55 with a couple other small fish, and two full-grown jd's are more than enough for a 55 (if they even get along) so without even bringing compatibility into the equation you're already at double what you should have in that tank long-term. i would rethink the stocking in this tank and quickly, before you start seeing deaths. the cory will not be safe in there with aggressive fish, and should really have more friends of its own kind to be happy and healthy.
