Bullying issue

Hi everyone, the tank is unchanged and still looks like this

I went to feed the fishes today and I saw him, he have been hiding for the last 2 days. I moved him into a breeder trap thing that I used to use for my guppy fry.

I'll see how it goes, hes eating well but I think hes swimming unbalanced, on a slight angle.

I can't believe he is still alive! I assume he is getting bullied because the largest rusty happens to be a male too, and the first rustie that died is also suspected to be a male. Maybe my dominant rusty is trying to kill off the other males?

As for the decorations, I'll see what I can do, there is literally no space on the back of the tank, a 55 gallon tank is not deep enough. I do have a few rocks though, maybe I can add a pile here and there.

Thanks for the advice.

Hey Kevin, the rockwork we see on this last pic is not the same that appears on the pic of your link in post #6 of this thread. So, the tank has changed for good! This last setup is great and doesn't need any rearrangement IMO, because there are a lot of hiding spots; that were lacking on the previous setup. Having nothing more to say about this, then I think that your problem's cause is the dominant rusty that you mentioned.

Yep, this picture was on the 2nd page of the thread in post 6.

I seriously think its the rusties, but not the male, I've been noticing 2 smaller ones (that i assume were female) trying to harass the injured one through the plastic box.

Even when I release the rusty after he's all healed up, he's still going to get attacked, that is the main problem.

But I'm just glad he's alive! :headbang2:

Yup, it's the same rockwork. Was a bit surprised when everyone started saying needed more, but like I said, been wrong before.

From this angle, I do see what Mr. Bishop was talking 'bout though as far as maybe not dividing things up well enough.

If ya do add anything, what I'd do is something like below. Put a rock where the colored shapes are in front and use rocks or thick bunches of plants at the back of the tank where I put the Xs to divide that up more. I can see the back glass through the rocks at those two points.

That said, now that ya know its the largest rusty bashing him, we're right back to my previous post, and exactly to what I suspected may be happening all along, and the suspicion efors confirmed. Too many males. Will your LFS let ya trade him in for another female? It'd be better than letting him get harassed to death.

true..guess I said it poorly earlier...while nie rock work, I just don't see that many hidey holes as others do...It is an extremely nice looking display. It could well be the rustie....personality often comes into play.

Hi! There are a few pieces of limestone that I left out of the tank, I suppose I can add those in. I totally see what you mean, the only place where I can say has lots of hidey holes is the rock pile on the right hands side, and that's becuase I was putting random smaller pieces together, I think the key to stacking rocks is to stack them randomly if you want hidey holes.

I witnessed a smaller rustie, of what i assumed was female trying to attack the injured one through the plastic box. A smaller female rusty tyring to attack a larger male rusty? What the heck is going on!? I don't think trading in that rusty for a female will work since I rarely see rusties around here and I brought the last 6 rusties.

I'll add a few more plants and rocks the next time i do a water change. Thanks guys.

cool setup, really nice looking, well my friend i didnt see this last photo before the only one i seen was a couple of formations of rocks not like this last photo and i will have to agree its the rusties being butts aye, well they are mbuna after all, i would totally take the one who is getting the beatdown and take him back and leave the rest as is and see how this pans out for you, sweet rocks my friend..

Let me tell you a story about my 4 rusties. They have been in my tank for almost 4 1/2 months. I thought they were all males because they chase a lot to each other. The most aggressive male, the one that looks most dominant, has been holding eggs for the last 2 days now. SHE IS SOME DOMINANT FEMALE!!! (as some of our wives are!). Now I'm almost sure I have 2 males and 2 females rusties. So Kevin, a female rusty can be more aggressive than a male; believe me :).
