The other day I noticed one of my female Afra acting odd, swimming near the top. 5 hours later, she was dead in the bottom of the tank. I've been working alot, so I probably missed early signs. So I started a treatment with Jungle Labs Parasite tabs a day later because I've since noticed a couple of others with the tell-tale white stringy poop and what seems to be heavier breathing. I've gotten some Metronidazole powder, and I will probably do a WC today and retreat again, as this seems to be one of the preferred methods. I have not fed the tank since Wednesday and I've left the lights off quite a bit. Any other suggestions/experiences you'd like to share? This is my 1st experience with this.

Thanks blue. I have read extensively about it, and shame on me for not having the meds ready right away. Luckily(hopefully) I found the tabs at a local store while I waited for the other meds to arrive from Jehmco.

I'm not really sure why they have it though. I feed NLS 1mm pellets once a day a few pinches. I also do 50% WC's once a week, and keep the tank clean. The only thing I can think of is that I'm either feeding a bit too much or there is some aggression going on that I'm not seeing. I'm thinking of trying to mix spirulina flake into their diet more often. Right now they get it about once a week.

Ok I just wanted to make sure.

That is odd though, usually food is what the cause is. But it could be something else. I feed my mbuna veggie flakes, catfish pellets and nls and I've never had a problem. Perhaps fasting for a day and adding some fresh veggies?

Yeah, it's got me stumped too. I haven't fed since weds. when I added the meds, but I'm still skeptical about the way a few are acting. I'm going to do a WC today and add metro powder and go from there, with my fingers crossed.

I'd believe it mike. I haven't changed my feeding regimen since nearly the day I got them all 6 months ago. My water params stay rock steady all the time without any additives, so I've got to lean toward stress. So far it seems like only my Afras are breathing heavier. I've seen others with the stringy poop, but not breathing heavy and they're eating. I have one male Afra that is constantly looking for companionship and chasing others away, so I'm wondering if he's the culprit.

IMO, a good diet can help a lot to avoid bloat, Rcr. I never have had again a bloat case, since following this weekly feeding program. I'm giving it to you, so you can use it as a guide; I hope it can be of some help:
Mon., Wed. and Fri. : spirulina flakes. I'm using the one with garlic and paprika from Kensfish. The one from ON is also great.
Tue. and Thur. : 1mm cichlid pellets. I'm using Dainichi Color Supreme. NLS is also great.
Sat. : freeze dried Mysis shrimp. This whole crustacean has good amount of fiber.
Sun. : Fast day.

Thank you efors, I will keep that routine in mind. Perhaps I will feed more spirulina than I had been to increase veggie intake.

If its food related i wouldn't feed for about 4 to 5 days..
