He shared my 50 gallon tank with another Pleco the same size as him, but they both stayed at each end of the tank...

In the first photo it looks like hes got an open wound, but when i looked at him last night before i went to bed he was fine and had no marks on him.

Any ideas what might have happened?

Sorry to here that, if it has an open wound it either got cut on something, or got in a scuffle, we had 2 BN plecos in the 80 gal and had to take one out, but you would know best about the temperament of your tank......:)

To be honest I've never seen them get into any brawls with each other, but whos to say whats going on at night when I'm not around to watch

I saw ours, no damage but it looked ruff, so i took out the ageresive one and gave her back to the shop........:)

I'd be willing to bet that they had a BATTLE ROYALE took place between the two once your lights were out & that lil one lost.

In my 75 gallon tank I once had two very very small bushynose plecos & every time they'd meet up on a piece of driftwood,...they would THROW DOWN, but the tank was so BIG compared to them, that even the frequent observer might not ever see them fighting.

Once they got up to about an three inches,...I found one dead & had an open wound on it, much like you are saying. I've seen that happen more than a few times.

You can also check your tank for sharp pieces of gravel, sharp snags on driftwood, anything that would cut this fish. Any other agressive fish in the tank?

With a tank that size, usually the loser in a brawl has time and space to back off before getting killed. You'd see damage to him long before you'd see him killed. I understand that was one night, and gone?
