I bought a dozen crickets. Put one in the tank and she snapped at it, then watched it roll in the filter wake. I pushed it toward her but the cricket played dead. (smart cricket) She just ignored it. So, we set the crickets freeeeee.
Once I found a spider, small harmless house spider on the floor. Threw it in the tank and in a blink of an eye, she snapped it up. I guess size is a factor.

I tried floating cichlid pellets, but no dice. Too hard I think. She took a bite and spit it out. Flake foods, soft floating foods seem to work.

Yeah, some of them are more willing to eat the crickets than others are, at work when I feed them, I take the cricket out of the water after a while if it hasnt eaten it. I let the cricket get some air so it wont drown, and throw it back in and try to make it move, 9/10 they end up eating it

Just to add to the great info Leopardess has given.

I have had mine for over a year. My first one found a narrow gap at the back of the tank and committed suicide. When there young their appatites are more hardy but slack off as they get older. I feed mine once or twice a week 1 medium cricket. I gets some remaining pellet or flake food after the lights go out. Mine is mostly nocternal now and is very nervious. Jumps into the top of the tank when the kids slam the door.

I keep my crickets for weeks in a small habitat with oatmeal and a damp paper towel or cotten ball. At a buck a dozen their cheap and my Butterfly loves them.

And yes some sort of cover makes for a happy fish.
