Buying canister filter

For my 125 gal, I am thinking of spending the $120-150 on eBay to get a Rena Filstar XP4 or XP3. New or gently used.

Actually this other one looks good for $95, rated up to 180 gal, it's a knock off brand, but they claim it's as good as Eheim.

I'd rather not spend over $165 especially if it's "cash" (I sometimes find people to trade which helps), but want something quiet and effective obviously.

I am not even positive if canister is the way I want to go? But I think so. I read a little on making a sump from another tank, but I think that's too much work for me to handle, and it would cost me to get the overflow and tank and everything.

And I know about searching craigslist for a used one, but it's hard to find someone selling the size you need during the week(s) you need it, lol.

I did find someone who is offering a canister rated up to 100 gallons for $50 that cost him $100. Depending on the brand, etc, might be worth buying, but then it's stupid if I have to go spend $70-$85 on another canister filter.

If it matters, I plan to use only super filtered water (7 stage RO/DI/UV) in my aquarium.

Any input? Thanks.

If you can find one in your price range a fluval FX5 would be a good filter to invest in. I wouldn't go for a knock off brand as getting parts for them can be hard. The rena filters are a good choise but you might want two of them, having two filters is better than having one anyway.

yes a fx5 can be bought with free shipping on ebay for under 200.00 i have bought 5 from there new for 179.00 w/ free shipping keep a eye on ebay always some good deals on there.

The Renas are rated for 175 gal and 265 gal.

FX5 is $200 on eBay at the lowest... sounds like more than I need?!

the tank sizes that the filters are rated for are typically not a realistic guideline. some filters may say that they can handle that large of a tank but in reality, no one would ever do it. which is why people are suggesting the FX5

Ive bought a couple fluval 404's (Off ebay) over the year for less than 40$ each and theyre not bad...

Just my 2 cents, but I run an XP3 and an XP2 on my 75 and find that to be just about perfect. The XP 2 is also my CO2 diffuser. I just run the CO2 into the intake and it dissolves it all before it makes it back to the outlet.

They are very simple and fairly hardy filters.
