Cacatuoides eating his mate's eggs?!

I have a male orange flash cacatuoides that is the pimp of my tank and is always displaying to my two females. Recently the smaller of my two females laid eggs in a rock cave that I was hoping they'd use. There were about 40 eggs to start with. When I looked at them the following day that number had been cut in half. I thought they might have moved them but as I observed later in the day the male came in, booted out the female and starting picking off the eggs and eating them! Any recommendations on what I should do to prevent this? I don't have an extra tank to do all that and was wondering if I should put the eggs in one of those protective net breeders?
