CaCl or CaSO4/Is Chloride a Problem?

A few months ago there was a discussion regarding Calcium Chloride and its effects, and whether Calcium Sulfate would be better for a planted tank.

I couldn't find the thread, so I'd like to start here.

I believe that it was Daveedka who brought up this subject. His plants were doing the same thing, although he dosed high concentrations of CaCl, he never got the results he was expecting when using it.

I dosed CaCl and KCI in my tank for many months (I have verryy soft water) and have always noted that although my plants do a little better, they never really recover completely from stunting. Deformed and melting leaves are a pain to deal with, and it's very discouraging to say the least.

So, I decided to try the Seachem Equil. and watched its effect on my plants. I've been using it for a total of 3 weeks and I have to say that my plants are looking so much better. The leaves are growing like mad and my plants are displaying such beautiful colors. It's amazing.

It seems that my plants love CaSO4, and K2SO4 better that CaCl and KCI. It bothers me how before, with so much dosing of CaCl and KCI, my plants never looked as good as they do now.

The most important thing for me is to take care of the stunting, and melting of leaves, which seems to have stopped.

Maybe chloride is the problem here. But I'm no chemist, so I'd like to hear other people's opinion on the subject.

Thanx.

I switched from CaCl2 to CaSO4 a few months ago. Definite improvement in plant growth, especially stellata and R. macaranda. I did underdose at first though so I had a small outbreak of white shelled snails.

Yes, now I remember. It was an experiment between you and David. But I never heard anything else from you guys and I was always curious to know how it had worked out for you both.

I'm happy that you had good results. You always have such a nice looking tank. ;)

I've been looking for something like this. Thanks for the link. :D

You're most welcome! Hope it helps.

Now if I could just find the link about the different calcium salts used in reef supplements for jodimartin...
