Camallanus Worms - now you see them, now you don't.

huzza!!!! go Bo Go!!!

what a trooper, this is a good example of a fish and its will to live...if he just flopped around and didn't move i would say just let him go but he has way to much drive and will.

he has not given up!!

<3 <3 good wishes to you and Bo!

Your encouragement is an inspiration, K. Hope your fish is doing well. Just a quick update to say that Bo continues to improve. He can raise himself up in the water and is swimming a little, though he still has a big bulge as you can see. Not sure what's going to happen long-term with that, but for now he's feeling better.

ahh he does look much better.

I have heard of Epson salt working to help cure the a prolapse @ 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons...

might be worth a shot or looking in to.

he does look allot better! still rooting for him.

and so far *fingers crossed* nothing has shown in my tank still...feeding medicated food still.

ok I was reading up a bit more on how to cure the prolapse, says salt, bump temp and starve the fish...witch is the last thing you would want to do for him at the moment.

..i think getting him back up and a little more healthy would be best before trying that method..maybe just the salt now to help things pass threw...dunno :(

Good suggestion re the epsom salts, I added some in today. Did a large water change and started the second worm treatment. Bo was scratching his chin on the wood, and for good reason. Turns out he has one attached that he just can't scrape off! AAAGGGHHHH!!! It's already losing color though, and Bo has settled down.

Also added a dose of Metronidazole for his Hole-in-the-Head. Both of these HITH outbreaks followed on the heels of the worm infestations, so a nutritional deficiency trigger makes sense.

He's holding steady, but still no appetite. He'll act interested in the food, but I find it on the sand later and retrieve it with a turkey baster. Hopefully he'll eat when he's ready and then be ravenous. I read that a high fiber diet rich in greens should help with the prolapse, but takes time. At least it's not red and doesn't appear infected.

Update: Bo has eaten today, that's always a good sign! Also has lost the chin worm that was clamped on. It seems to me that the prolapse is a little less swollen as well, but I'm not sure.

Bo really is a trooper,

and it does look less swollen maybe the salt is helping!...

..>.> I feel like Bo's cheerleader go Bo GO!!!!!

I know, it's crazy! Especially since he's about 90 in ram years. He should have a walker, this fish!

He's back to sleeping in his regular spot between a rock and plant on the right side. For a couple of weeks he just rested wherever, probably because of his swimming disability. Turns out he had a bad flipper too, you can kind of see it in the pics, his left pelvic fin. Don't know if it was injured from the inside (worms), or if he hurt it another way, but it could be why he was falling over. It's better since he's been exercising it, going up and down in the water. Adorable.

When I started this thread, I was just referring to the worms tendency to disappear in moving fish. Now I know they have the ability to hide for long periods of time, and this whole thing could have been avoided if only I had dewormed stock in quarantine. I do it automatically for puppies and Bo is like a pup to me. The only difference being I can't pet him without damaging his slime coat, but he will eat out of my hand. lol I'll try to get some pics up when I find my camera...

Update: Bo's appetite and swimming continues to improve. Still has the prolapse, but it isn't slowing him down much. At least I can now treat his hole-in-the-head with food, since adding metro to the water didn't help much.

Did a large water change, vacuumed, cleaned the filter, and added charcoal to remove the meds. Only replaced some epsom salts.
