Camallanus Worms - now you see them, now you don't.

I have always purchased my Levimasole HCL and Flubendazole 10% from Charles Harrison at http://www.inkmkr.com/Fish/
There are some very helpful articles and dosing information on the site.

I would not go near that 52 gm for $20 stuff at that link. I do not know what other stuff is in it. This is what the label says"

From http://www.jefferslivestock.com/images/label/16398.htm

What the heck is "activity" What else is in there?

I've used the 52gm for $20 "Prohibit" brand with perfect success, no harmful side effects, and no post worm infections.

This link includes the MSDS & Label for the actual product, from the manufacturer:

I believe "activity" refers to the fact that Levamisole HCL depends on a chemical reaction to do it's job as a dewormer. If you were to use inactive Levamisole, that reaction would not take place. According to it's label, once mixed to form the solution, it only has a shelf life of 3 months.

Care to share dosing? Did you add directly to the water column?

i dosed the levamisole like this

5grams treats 100 gallons
i took 10 of what ever increments you want 10 cups..10 table spoons ext...i used 10 tablespoons of water

mixed the 5 grams of levamisole with 10tbs of water mixed well..meaning every tablespoon treates 10 gallons
added it to the water..fed the fish like normal but kept the lights off i have read its light soluble after 24 hours i did a deep water change..90% or bigger cleaning under everything and in the substrate.
repeat in 3 weeks

I followed this guide

Those are great pics! Sorry I have not yet been able to get pics of mine that are worth posting.

After seeing your pictures and spending a lot of time this weekend staring at my pearl's underside, I'm starting to believe it is not a worm and is some sort of anatomical thing. Let me know if you think my reasoning is sound:
1. the thing looks like a worm in some pics, BUT is always straight. It never wriggles or even bends.
2. The only time it moves is when the fish tenses spreads it's bottom fin or tenses its abdominal muscles
3. there's only one, and it's always there
4. When I did a water change this week and the pearl blanched out in color (he is normally a very dark rich orangey red but gets almost colorless when scared),the thing blanched too.

Awesome pics. How are they doing?

It's been 6 days after the initial feeding of the levamisole flakes and the number of worms have slightly diminished. A lot of the fish are releasing white mucusy poop, which I'm hoping is a good sign. I just bought some panacur and seachem focus in case I have a strain of the worms that are resistant to levamisole. I'll do one more treatment of levamisole flakes next week and make a decision from there.

Btw, does anyone know how levamisole works on the worms? I know in theory it's supposed to paralyze the worms so that the fish can pass the worms through the intestines. But is it a permanent paralysis or temporary? Once passed, can they still re-infect another fish if eaten?

the adult parasite won't last long outside the host//secondary infections (bacterial infections can be a problem.).
also levamisol usually doesn't kill the eggs of the parasite so reinfectionn can occur , which is why the recomendation for retreatment in 2 weeks

*sigh* the battle continues!!!!! ..tried the Flubendazole 22.2 % 1 gram pack on my 65 gallon..lost two more rainbows *cry*..gah im getting so beat down by this bug!!!!!!

doses the 1 g pack with a little vodka like you said it does help dissolve.

today i did 2 1g packs in a little vodka..mixed well and added water..let that sit for about 30 mins and added it to the tank..continuing to feed both the Flubendazole and levamisol flakes as much as possible.
the tank looks like milk...so im going to let them soak in it for 2-3 days ..than another big 90% water change..if this does not work im going back to the levamisol and try that again...and if that does not work next step is to dose the he!! out of it with copper after removing everything but the fish..bleach dip all of it remove gravel and boil it....im about to NUKE this tank!!!.

I WANT TO SCREAM SO BADDDDDDD!!!! GGRRRRRR ...:( *CRY* ..Feel so helpless right now ...
