This was a large hardcover book of fairy tales.
-one story was about a boy and his beagle who are kidnapped by trolls. they give him a challenge - the boy is presented with a completely full bag of jewels and gold. the bag is so full that anything else added to it will just fall out, but they challenge him to put just one more thing in the bag. if he can do it, he can go home safely and the treasure will be his. The boy has no idea what to do, but the dog goes up to the bag, "puts" a hole in it, and the trolls are forced to keep their word and let them go.
-another tale was the "welsh fairy cow" story, where two poor farmer's children get hold of a magical white fairy cow, with the promise that she must be taken care of. the cow makes lots of nice milk and butter and babies, but eventually she stops producing. the greedy farmer father, wanting to get every last penny, tries to send her to slaughter. then the fairy calls all her cows and the babies home to her. the children are left witha single cow, but the fairy changes it from white to pure coal black.
-Several Hans Christian Anderson stories - Little Mermaid, Tinder Box, Brave Tin Soldier, Wild Swans, The Snow Queen, The Little Match Seller
-there was a version of Rumpelstiltskin that was a little disturbing
-one story about a haunted or magical cradle, the family takes the baby outside while working on the farm, leaving it in the cradle, and a beast comes out of the woods but does not harm the child. I think they end up destroying the cradle and burning it, but they can still hear a baby crying sometimes outside.
The book was heavily illustrated, with a variety of artists. Probably a lot more stories than are listed here, but these are just the ones I remember. Definitely British.
