As suggested a powerhead was added to the centre of the aqaurium (SEIO M625 superflow pump) directed down onto the rocks...

Also the bubbles have been removed leaving a grey skim ontop of the tank.

Whew, I am glad that someone found something about airstones> I was beginning to get concerned that I had made that whole thing up...

It is typically not a good idea to use crushed coral for a substrate. however, many people still do it, especially with their first tank...some are even advised to use crushed coral by their LFS... I almost went down that road, but the guy selling me the tank, etc. wouldn't let me buy the tank if I didn't by the right kind of substrate. Sorry, didn't even notice that this AM. As your tank is having some problems cycling, you might want to consider swapping it out... in the long run you will be much happier.

Ok..... can I use c.c if i syphon it regularly? The LFS told me they didnt advise to use sand anymore as C.C was better. He wouldnt let me buy sand.......

Man, that is a shame. There are a host of problems with CC that relate not only to its difficulty in cleaning, but also relates to its ability to keep water parameters stable. I would speak with him in earnest on this topic...

As for cleaning your gravel, you really don't want to mess with teh substrate at all... SW if very different.
