Can anyone id this fish?

My mate bought this fish at a lfs today,
but has no idea what it may be?
I was thinking some kind of hybrid,
Maybe texas cichlid and ?? but i am only guessing.
anyone any ideas as to what it may be?

looks like a green terror to me, or maybe a dempsey (though I don't think it could be a dempsey, to "sleek")....my vote is green terror... but don't quote me on that...wait for more people to reply.
 
I'm betting it's a very small Jack Dempsey.

I know, it looks kinda like a Dempsey, but then it's face seems to narrow to me in a way.....not as colorful as a terror, but same shape.....very perplexing...not a Texas Cichlid....at least I'd bet not.

After looking at the pics. by Kas, I'd say it doesn't have markings like a terror, that the markings are definately more spotty like a Dempsey.

So at the moment, my strongest inclination is J.D., young, small, not colorful yet....but *shrug* who knows. We need Harlock and Daveedka to comment, lol :bowing:

I'd agree with that, mostly. The rear "eye" spots are near identical... but the eyes are differently colored and the cichlid has stripes where the other one is more wavy.

Is it possibly Hemichromis bimaculatus (Jewel Cichlid)?
 
odd fish

I am sure this is a convict dempsey cross .I have seen them before. It has the coloration of a dempsey ,and the small tapered mouth of a convict.You can almost see the convict stripes showig through.I have some texas convicts that look much the same.
