The Eheim 2013 is another good choice. It's a little pricy though. I agree an ac50 would be a good hob choice. The ac70 may be a bit too powerfull for a small tank.
I love my aquaclear HOB. Easy to clean. Versatile media. Downside is sometimes it's noisy and the top rattles. I love the sponge media. I rarely have to buy new sponge. I also have a sunsun cannister. Seems to be going good, but I have only had it for a few months.
Not overkill at all. For a planted tank you will be better off with a canister. You'll have many more options than with a HOB and you can customize your output.
Filter brands are like Ford and Chevy, everybody likes what they like.
Personally I like Fluvals and when I get to choose I buy them for my maintenance clients. Easy to clean, easy to prime (usually) this is my only pet peeve with fluval, we can send a man to the moon but they can't make a self priming filter. Parts are fairly standard. Go with a 205 or 204 if you can find a good used one. As long as the motor works you can find any replacement part for them.
I'm using a Rena at home right now and really like it. I may not replace the fluvals with it but it works great in my tank.
Ehiem are kind of like the Hondas of the canister filter world. Not really better at what they do but they have a rabid following. I don't like the output of Ehiem and the Ehiem ECCO's I have worked on were crap to try to get the handle latches to match up after a few times. Then you are working on them with a screw driver and butter knife to get the top off. When time is money it makes me want to drop kick them. At home I WOULD drop kick them.
