Can anything be done to help a gourami build a bubble nest?

Hi all,


My male Thick Lipped Gourami sometimes starts collecting bubbles in one corner of the tank and I've seen him courting with the female at times (writhing around in a circle with her). Trouble is he does'nt seem to be the best bubble nest builder.
He gets to around 3 layers deep and that's it. Then it disappears and he starts again later on.
There are no plants at surface level in that corner of the tank, and there's a very slight rippling on the surface from the filter.
Is there anything I need to do to help him out?

You've pretty much answered your own question :)
Float some plants to stop the surface agitation in that corner. Anacharis works well. I tie a thread to one end and another to the other end and then drape it across the top of the water. I use the lid to hold the threads.

What do the threads do?

I have anacharis that I let sit at the top of my tank. My filter is on one end, and the other end is the calm one, with all the plantage. It remains where it should except for a stray every once and a while. It's awsome, because it needs virtually no care, my betta loves hanging in it, and it grows well- it gets nice and thick and I don't feel bad if some of it dies- less pressure!

I have also used plastic "baby grass", made for fry, just float it at the top, to reduce surface movement.
 
the threads are to hold the plants in place.

you can but a foam cup in half and stick it to the corner that the fish likes to build in, that method is used by betta breeders to help their bubble nests from fallin apart.
 
My gourami just took parts of the cabomba that was in the tank with him and constructed his own nest. Looked like a little floating dome. pretty cool.
