Can guppies get "stuck" giving birth?

I catch babies all the time funny enough i call it sunday fishing, every sunday for the last 3 we wake up to angels chasing babies around, last week i pulled 20 swords out, its fun

I know guppies give birth like mad, this is my first one and I'd like to keep em alive.
I lost my other female, no idea where she went ( never found a body ). So now I'm down to one male and possibly one other male ( got him as a mystery fry from petsmart, he's coloring up beautifully ). I want to keep this batch to have some genetic variance as she was pre-hit and not in the same tank as my male....

rambly :nilly:

no worries , she will make it

some may be eaten but most do and will survve depend on your set up. and if theres any hiding places for them, mine survived in the filter when they got suked into it. thats an external filer tho, after around 4 weeks your other fish wont be bothered in wanting to eat them , thats depending you have no rerally large fish in there

There is a random assortment of live bearers ( petsmart gives me their fry that they can't sell ) and a GBR pair, it is planted on one side with a little cave structure and the other side is open for swimming room.

baby guppies are live food for most fish, try getting the one out first then catch her and put her back in the breeder

well GBR are baby eaters and good at catching and hunting them, but you should have some decent survivers plus your other live bearers will be be dropping soon on the month every month u can time them exactly to the day

Ive seen someone with a mama guppy that had just passed away gently - and I do mean very gently - give her a squeeze and out popped several live fry. Myself I wouldnt do it with a dead fish only because of fear that the babies wouldnt be healthy but since shes alive and its just stuck I would probably try the net method first and see if it scares it out of her. If not I personally would try the squeezing. Good luck. I hope she comes out of it ok!

Can the babies be caught and put back in the net?
They will get eaten if they stay in the tank

I allow all my preggo moms to birth in the tank as anything else stresses them badly. I then net the little ones and put them in a breeder. It is not true that they will get eaten. Not all will eat their young. It depends on the particular fish. I also find that by netting the young, it is a better way to ensure they eat. Even at that, there is a certain amount of cannibalism that occurs.

Do you remove the adults when trying to net the fry? I have such a hard time catching the little things! Last time I had to literally remove all the adults, decorations and most of the plants to catch them and I still ended up leaving one behind that did end up dinner for someone later that day. I couldnt for the life of me get them in the net so I ended up using a plastic cup while my three kids said "left! no right! no left!" lol it was quite the event.
