can hold weight of tank?

 Sorry, Ikea book shelf will be insufficient to support the weight. (even on it's side). It will fail & you'll be :swear::swear::swear: "T"

That shelf has no side support to keep the tank from swaying back and forth. For it to work you would have to purchase 4x8 3/4" plywood and screw it on to the back. Thats not even say what else would go wrong, shelves are not made to handle 600lbs. wood and metal stands dont cost alot of money I think even meta stands are cheaper than that shelf. graigslist will im sure have some used stands for sale

ryan...:

I am embarrased to admit that I did not check the link first but the shelf from Ikea does not seem adequate. You plan on turning it but it is still particle board and even though it probably will, initially, hold some tanks the racking to the side is a very real possibility. By using a thick piece of plywood on one side it probably will strengthen the stand but the leading edge will still be sort of weak even though the ply board will prevent racking.

If you do decide to make a stand use plain old wood glue to hold it together. You can use clamps or brads/nails until the glue dries but do not depend upon metal fasteners to hold the wood together although the brads can be left in after the glue dries. Someone with a Table Saw will need to rip the 1 bys for the corners but the thin plywood can be cut with a straight ruler and box cutter knife.

Do yourself a favor and do not use the shelf unit to hold tanks. Good luck. If you need more help just ask.
