can I add another filter?

Hi all,

I have a spare canister filter which I would like to fit on my tank.
Do I need to do anything other than clean everything and fit it to the tank?

Tank spec as follows:
60ltr (approx 14galls)tank
live rock,
hob filter,
protiene skimmer,
2 snails,
2 hermit crabs,
1 fire shrimp,
1 cleaner shrimp,
2 small clowns.

Although I have the hob filter, I feel it is not doing much in terms of filtration and I would want to replace it with the canister filter.
Any advice bout my setup and the canister and hob filter appreciated.
 
well, you wouldnt want to use either for filtration, just water flow.

if you have any media in the HOB or canister, take it out.

your filter is Live Rock. The more LR and flow you have in a tank, the better it is for everybody.

@14gal you want 280-560 gallos per hour (gph) goin through your tank.

i have an 18 gallon. for water movement i have 2 90gph rios, a nano korilla 240 gph, and a hob modded fuge/skimmer thing thats 200 gph.

so in 18 gallons i have 620 gph of flow running over approx 28lbs live rock. thats my filter.
 
take all stuff (media) out of both. id suggest running both.

maybe stick some LR ruble in the hob.

you can also use the hob as a mini fuge thing, and stick yer heater and such in there.

if both is too much on the tank, maybe run the canister in the hob?
 
i would leave the filter pads or sponges in the filter to catch or trap any particles in the tank. increased water movement will help keep particles susspended in the water column so they can be mechanically removed. live rock is only a natural bacterial filter.
 
BeelzeBob, I think you and me have the wrong idea about what a hob filter is. I may be wrong but i call it a hob because it does hang on the back. Its only small though. Check the second pic. What kind of filter is this? Its made by aqua one.

Here's some pics for you, can anyone give advice please?
Have I set it up ok? Any suggestions?

i would add a second powerhead and place it on the left front corner of the tank. for saltwater i always tell people to use a filter rated for twice the size tank they have...at least.
 
okay, an HOB is a filter that hangs on the back.

you dont want media in the filter because it can trap detritus, and become a nitrate trap.

yea. you want to stay away from mechanical filtration in SW, especially reefs, bra.

this is why we have nitrogen cycles and DSB, and LR. this allows our tanks to PROCESS waste, not just take out.

filterpads, bio-balls, acrylic chucks, are all trash. wothless.

maybe keep some carbon around for chemical removal and such. but if your having clarity problems, you r lookin at like an algae/bacteria bloom, precipitation event, etc.

a filter pad will be like a band-aid on a bullet wound
