In a few months I am planning on upgrading my 20 and 30 gallon tanks to a 55 gallon. I was wondering if I would have to cycle the new tank or just combine my LR, sand, and livestock from my other 2 tanks. Could I use about2/3 of my current water and top off the last 1/3 with new water? Both tanks have the same water conditions/ parameters.

Does anybody know if this would be bad for the livestock/ water parameters?

IF it was me, i would lay a new sand bed ( new sand ) with a couple of cup's of live sand from existing, use all live rock, and use 50% old water and fill up with new water..Watch parameters for a week or two...There should be no new cycle but you parameter tests will show if there is...

My buddy combined his two 29-gallon tanks into his new 55-gallon with no problems.

What do you plan on doing with the filters after the initial changeover?

that should be fine but i would go with only 50% of the water and the rest new like atnixon said but i would use all ur old sand along with new sand on top. just when u pull the old sand out use a strainer to get the mucky water out that way the wast is not brought over. i moved my 29 gallon into a 55 in one day over about 12 hours it went great and the only bad thing was a small spell of ich. just watch the water and do some close changes of water ad recommend weekly tell it stables out again.
