Can I cycle a tank with only part-time filter?

Hi everyone,

I only run my filter during the days (8am-11pm). Can I still cycle my tank if the filter is only running 15 hours a day?

And here's a question that may be incredibly dumb...
I have nylon over the intake valve of my tank's filter to slow down the current--will this affect the cycling process (ie. make it take longer to cycle or disrupt cyling in any way)?

Thanks :)

You should run the filter 24/7. Running it 'part-time' means the wastes build up when the filter is turned off, and the water in the filter container may go stagnant, resulting in bacteria die-off as the oxygen levels drop. Not a good idea. So, yes, this may impact the cycle, and it certainly won't do fish any favors down the line.

Reducing flow will not impact the cycle duration as long as the water is still moving.

you should be running the filter at all times. the bacteria need a constant flow of oxygen, and need to be moist as well. turning off the filter affects both of those things. also, turning it on and off can put a lot of stress on the equipment itself and it won't last as long. having it running at all times allows it to deal with wastes on a constant basis, but by turning it off wastes will build up and the filter needs to be run even longer to 'catch up', esp. during a cycle. ammonia and nitrite levels will probably get very high. the lack of surface agitation and buildup of wastes overnight will reduce available oxygen in the water itself as well, making it harder for both fish and bacteria.

why do you only run it during the day?

the nylon idea is fine, and will actually provide more surface area for bacteria to grow on, so long as it doesn't get clogged up with plants bits or food.
