I have a 36g planted tank with 2 banded rainbows, one pearl gourami, one bolivian ram, one cory cat (soon to be more like 5 or 6), and 3 upsideddown cats. I'm also planning on adding some a school of small tetras. I'd like to add some shrimp that are pretty cool and that I can see (i.e. not ghost shrimp.) Firstly, can I add any shrimp with this mixture of fish? If yes, what kind and how many can I have?

Most of the fish you have would enjoy snacking on shrimp, especially juveniles. I really don't know that you would have a very successful time keeping shrimp. I would recommend starting a small invert tank and trying some full-sized adult shrimp in the tank if you decide to get shrimp. You would still need areas of dense planting ot protect the adults.

Test it out with a couple of ghost shrimp.
