I saw a tank the other day that had a 3 dimentional internal background decoration, looked very natural, like stone, it had spaces for the filtration and all, so you really only see the "stone". Not sure if im describing it well... What could I use to safely make one of these? Or, where could I find one cheap?

Not sure what it takes to make one but I've seen a few set up in tanks and they look really good

the second link from rbishop is what I would do. Be creative though and create whatever rock shape you want, make caves, or a shear rock face look. It's up to your imagination. You can also make it so all your equipment is behind it etc. You can get the styrafoam from homedepot etc. you can also put a couple layers together to carve out caves, or carve out the back to accomodate equipment.

Would it be a terrible idea to try this with an existing tank? We may be moving in the next 6 months, maybe I should wait till then.

If anyones done this, any guidlines as far as hiding equipment? Do you wish youd done anything different?

I'd angle off the corners so I had a vertical chamber, top to bottom for more equipment. Also, more curves, to kind of break the tank into halves or thirds, to help break the line of sight from females all nesting. Bigger ledges/pockets to hold potted plant root structure.

What is the reasoning behind having water flow behind the decoration? WHat if fish get stuck back there?
And, is there anything besides concrete I could use to cover the styrofoam core? Concrete just seems so heavy....

My reasoning was to hide equipment from view when in front of the tank. Most articles I've read have you seal it for no water back there or allow entrances/exits for pumps and flow but thru screens/sponges to prevent access.

Concrete, not as heavy as you might think, it's just a skim coat, use the styro to make the depth and shape, which is most of the bulk.
