Can I mix different tetras in a small tank?

However your point about the tetras not being able school in such a small tank is a good one- but also leaves me kind of frustrated about it, because if you can't put in small fish (now) and bigger fish won't fit, so... what should I put in my 12g? Suggestions?

You can put the fish in the tank, but if your objective is to have the look of schooling fish, it won't really work, thats all :) . The tank would still be nice!

If the fish are the same size and have the same behavior, they will probably tend to school together.

My neons and Serpae tetra's didn't school with each other very much, but my Serpae Tetra's school right with my tiger barbs. They're the same size, shape, behavior, and look similar, and they blend right in.

I think they would still be happy with just 2 or 3 species that were very similar type of fish.

tanks that size i recommend balloon mollies or fancy guppies and some cory's for the bottom. active and fills out the water columns and you'll also have the excitement ofg fry.
