Hey guys, i was just wondering if macro algaes such as chaetomorpha algae can be placed in a HOB filter like an aquaclear??

Does it need light to survive??

Also, what other stuff could i place in the HOB filter to reduce nitrates or provide a source of food that does not require a light??

Most people just use the filter to move water, but their is a fair sized chamber in the filter, which i figured could be used for something.

I have a softball-sized ball of chaeto in an AC500 hanging off the back of my 46-gallon. The AC is lit by the light off of an old Hexafun betta tank with an IKEA pc bulb.

Works terrific - I have to pull out a handful every few weeks.

By the way, what is some good micro algae for a FOLWR set-up??
