Can I retro fit this?

I have one of the generic, run of the mill canopy lights on my 36g tank. I want to replace the lighting with something better but not too crazy. I really dont need much. I like the "oak" colored light fixture on there now so I was wondering if there is any thing I can do to gut this thing and retro-fit it with something else?

You could possibly retrofit it for a single compact or so. I think there are some fairly slim ballasts out there you could use.
