Everyone: I'd like to see pics of your otos. I'd like to hear oto stories, good/bad/funny/sad. I don't own any but I might want to, so I'm trying them out vicariously through you!

As cute as they are, it's far too iffy as to whether they'll live or not for me. My initial batch did poorly and I equated that to my tank being too new. The second batch lived a few months and were doing well and just recently started dropping dead mysteriously. I like them, but won't get them again.

mine are eating slime coat off any fish that they can get to. they die suddenly as well. not a good fish inmy opinion. i have a pic on my post on "otos sucking onto other fish".

McLovin!

Got him (dont know sex) almost 2 months ago, named him McLovin. He is in the 20g. 1 week after getting him the tank got ich and he had it too. I thought he was a goner for sure reading how fragile they are. After 2 weeks of daily water changes, ich slowly went away with mclovin being the last one with it. He survived and still lovin the algae.

I'm afraid to get one because I don't want them biting my fish.

I had three, lost two. My shrimp and GBRs ate them.... picked the bones clean before I found them.... I'm glad I had the shrimp to keep my tank clean. I have one now, that seems to being doing alright. I wish I had some pics, but he hides in the plants and in the back of the tank alot.

Hi, we have three in each of two tanks totalling six. never see them, even in the 20 gallon stil never see them. In my 50 gallon no point even looking. If I could do it over I wouldn't get them again, would probably go dwarf chain loaches or something for the bottom, cos they have cool personalities. so nope, not my best buy

Wow, almost everyone seems to not be a fan of their otos. I personally love mine! They're amazing at cleaning up the algae! They do get fed other things but mostly just want the algae growing the leaves and ornaments. When I first got them, the back wall of the tank had a lot of algae growing on it and I thought it would take them a few days to clean it all off but the next morning when I turned on the lights, the algae was all gone! I also see mine all the time, they're never hiding. Sometimes the frogs get a hold on them in their mouths, but they always seem to get away. I'd recommend them for sure! I've had a good experience with mine...so far anyway.

I have two otos (Spot and Spaz) and they seem to be doing fine. They don't mind their tank mates and to my knowledge have not "latched on" to any of them. I also have never seen any of the others having a problem with them either. They're always up front in the tank. They each have their favorite places to hang out.

That would be Spot. Spaz is usually, well....spazzing out and so very hard to get a pic. Spot is Spot because he/she usually stays in one spot for a while and (duh) has the "spot" on the tail. Spaz has more of a solid line from nose to tail and as previously stated is zooming around the tank.

I love oto's. I've got 2 in with my betta fish Frankie.
They do a pretty good job. They don't hide a lot. They mainly are on the glass, the driftwood or on one of the plants. I've never seen them bother Frankie . I have however have seen Frankie chase them once in a while lol.
I really like oto's. I plan on getting a 3rd one pretty soon. I've always had good luck with them.

Here is a picture of the one oto.
