im nto 100% on this but im sure i read someone using cholla as a harbour for denitifying bacteria

Cholla wood is safe for aquarium use; I've had pieces in my personal tanks before that my shrimp and fish used as hideouts. The only way cholla would be unsafe is if it was treated with chemicals.

i recall reading that cholla breaks down faster than regular driftwood, so you may be replacing the pieces sooner than later, but it is safe for tank use and i'm sure your fish would love the natural tunnel formation and 'peek a boo' holes, lol.

perhaps do the boil and bake just to ensure there are no nasties in the wood, before plunking it in your tank.

totally safe

i would personally boil it for a while, clean/brush it, boil again, rinse, and then put it in
