I just got a new diatom DE filter for the tank. Can I use DE that's used in a pool filter in the DE filter on the aquarium?

Thanks

Good question. Since it does come in purity grades, I'd be afraid to use anything less than food grade. If you can find purer grades (analytical grade or better), that would be even more desirable. From what I can see, even food grade isn't as good as you'd think.

I have a System 1 DE filter I have been using it for a few years now and instead of paying the outrageous price for system 1 DE powder I have been using DE I get at my local swimming pool supply store for over a year now and have had no problems at all. JUST MAKE SURE IT IS PURE DE POWDER WITH NO ADDED CHEMICALS. I pay 15.99 for a 25 LB box I was paying almost that much for a 4 1/2 LB bag of system 1 DE powder. I have 11 aquariums so I go thru alot of DE.

Unfortunately, that will all be dictated by brand, etc. I have seen some technical grade powders (i.e. the kind commonly used in pools) have a LOT of copper in them.

I use leslie's pool suppy brand here in california its just 100% pure DE powder and have had no problems. Not sure if it is available nation wide. I would just check to see what brands are available in your area and call the company that makes it and ask what the make up is because you want to use it to filter aquarium water thats what I did.
