Can my fish take the heat???

i had the same problem a week or so ago and didn't know what to do, so i let it go (bad idea) i woke up to two dead angel and my big silver (i've had him for almost 5 years) is on the bottom on his side barly breathing , i lost him and two others soon after, since than i've just ran a fan accrost the top of the water to cool it down or leave the top open

really, US aquarium fish are just way too fussy, I used to have fish in SE Asia, daily temp at 90 all the time, no fan, no chiller, just an air stone, nothing ever died from heat (even cold water fish like fancy goldfish.)

I think an air stone to keep water circulating and add oxygen to water is a must Beside that, open tops, lids, stand's doors ; close your room shades, and your fish should make it through.

BandiCat,

I'm in Sydney with no AC, and we had some very hot weather here last summer. I don't think my tank temps got quite as high as yours, but pretty close, and the fish came through just fine.

Do yours look stressed?

I agree with everyone else, adding ice will cause more harm by changing the temp too fast.

Everyone else gave some good tips by having a fan run across the top.

But you might also want to add an airstone if you dont already have one, because oxygen levels drop in higher temps.

But besides that everything should be fine, fish arent in the danger zone until they hit the 90s, that is when you should worry but for now just open the top and have a fan blow across the top.

Thanks all! My tank temp is holding around 84, and I have the lid off and am blowing air on the surface. The shrimp don't seem to be as stressed as they were last night (they are more active today and the shrimp are grooming my plants, which is normal for them) I have an airstone in the tank as well to keep the oxygen up.

It normally get hot here in Cali BandiCat and my fish suffer no ill effects just make sure to have lots of water aggitation and you should be fine. Luckily so far its been gloomy here not real high temps but wont last forever.

Time to look for an AC cuz my fish tolerate the heat way better then I do.

My suggestions would be just make sure you have good O2 levels in the tanks and keep that fan blowing they will be fine with the slight heat. I have had tanks to reach that 90 mark before when electric went out in the hottest part of the summer outside temps were reaching 115. My house felt like an oven, I just closed all the shades and turned on fans (battery operated, of course) and left it in higher hands. Everybody faired well although I don't figure they appreciated those high temps for 4-5 days but when the electric did come back on everybody was ok and the house cooled back down and everybody went back to normal with probaly less ich living in any tanks, lol, might have even cut down on possible parasites.

O and almost forgot I lessened my feeding amount, don't know if it mattered or not but I know that I eat less in the heat, so why wouldn't they.

Good Luck
