i have a 5 gallon betta tank that i bought new and cycled 6 months ago. at the time, i bought new gravel, plastic plants, it came with an aquatech brand filter & filter pads (all new). it has been setup and running all this time with no problems. about a month to six weeks ago i bought 2 mystery snails, one for each of my betta tanks, but one of the bettas attacked his snail. so the 2 mystery snails wound up in one tank together with the other betta. that was about 4-6 weeks (estimate) ago. everything i read says if they do happen to mate, they will lay an egg sack above he water line & also its very obvious. since i change and inspect this tank once a week, and didnt notice any sign of an egg sack, im assuming this is not a mystery snail. besides, its a dead ringer for the pond snail pics i've seen online. i found it in the top of the ug filter tube near where the bubbles come out the holes. my ug filter tube doesn't have any carbon cartridge attatched. also, this tank has never had any live plants in it, and i have seperate nets/supplies for each of my tanks. how did this lone pond snail wind up in this tank? i should also mention that there were many pond snails in the mystery snail tank at the pet store. i believe its unlikely that snails of one species could produce offspring of a diff. species, right? could a pond snail egg have hitched a ride in on one of the mystery snail's shells? also, none of the water from the store tank inside the bag actually went in my tank either. there was only one snail, so should i be worried about finding more in there? as soon as i found it, it was seperated immediately into a mason jar. can we put this snail in our pond? thanks ahead for any advice.

sounds like you found a hitchhiker...I bought a briggs a couple months ago and it had about 5 juvie brigs riding along inside his shell...i dropped him in the tank and then there were 6 snails lol...it can happen

what?! thats freaky. i always heard to wash live plants really well b4 bringin in to ur tank & Q any new fish comin in. but i have never heard of snail hitch hikers before & also nvr heard of Q snails either. i wish i had known because i dont want any pest snails :( also the 2 mystery snails are pulled out twice a week and get special diet of fresh veggies. i'm really careful not to overfeed the tank with fish food because it is only 5 gallons and is overstocked already. do u think a pest snail population will develop?
*EDIT* what i meant was, i've heard of snail hitch hikers, just not on/inside other snails. lol. can i relese it into our outside pond?

uh...you could probably release them...i've found the best way to kill out pest snails is drop in a piece of zucchini over night...in the morning pull it and be careful not to knock any of the snails off it that have come to feed (unless you want to keep them) and then drop it in bleach...probably not the most humane way of doing things but it works. You can certainly deal with the population if you work at it a bit tho

ok thanks alot fozzybear. so far i just seen the one little guy, but if i see another one, i'll try the zuchinni trick until (hopefully) i get them all.

To answer your question with a question can a dog give birth to a cat?

rofl, i know right. i was trying to figure it out though. i've nvr heard of snails hitching rides on/inside other snails. i know it didnt just come in the house, crawl up the shelf, climb the tank, open the lid, and jump in..lol. very funny petluvr
