Hi Friends !

I'm setting up a Paludarium for a few newts that I'm getting. Just wanted to know if Newts can / do climb vertically on glass and other surfaces. I'm asking this to know if I will need a tight fitting hood to prevent any escapes / deaths. Kindly guide me Friends...

Thanks and Regards
Kush

I kept newts years ago, I had them in a paludarium and they never escaped. I know they can't climb glass, but may walk up an angled branch. Mine never climbed any of the plants and never really tried to escape.

I think you will be ok without a hood or screen top, I never needed one.

I think you're thinking of geckos...

Newts can climb glass. They are not as good at it as some salamanders, but I have seen them do it. Get a secure lid. A hinged glass lid is ideal; it is secure and keeps humidity high in the paludarium.

I agree, a secure lid is the way to go. Even if the newts you acquire can't get out, no potential predators(and possibly fewer bugs) will get in.

Hi Friends !

Thanks a lot for the kind replies for all the care. I guess I'll better have a secured hood then... Just wanted to request you to kindly guide me on what a hinged glass lid looks like. Kindly guide me on the same Friends...

The one that I have now is a Wooden Hood which has a few gaps but I guess I'll seal the gaps.

Thanks again Friends,
Lots of Regards and Care

Here is a commercial glass lid: http://www.aquariumguys.com/glasscanopy1.html

It consists of two panes of glass joined by a plastic hinge, plus a strip of plastic along the back edge which may be cut to accomodate cords, airlines, filters, etc.

You can make your own glass canopy with two appropriately sized pieces of glass, with a bead of slilicone run on top of (not inside) the joint to form a hinge. You can also use packing tape to make the hinge, but you will have to replace the tape every few months.

You can silicone a cabinet pull to the front pane of glass to make it easier to lift.

If you need to have cords or airlines coming out of the tank, cut a corner off the back piece of glass. If this leaves too large a gap when the cords are in place, you can stuff the gap with fabric or filter sponge to prevent the newt from crawling through it.

Hopefully this helps to make things clear:

Of course, you can also just lay a sheet of glass on top of your tank and not fool with hinges. The hinged top is nice because you can leave your aquarium light sitting on the back part of the glass while you lift the front part. If you don't have a light sitting on top of the tank, a single sheet of glass will work just as well.
