Can smoke from a fireplace kill fish?

Yeah, i hear you..FWIW, I dont think it has as much to do with the type of wood, ect as it wuld have to do with how he started the fire. Like if he put lighter fluid on it or something of the sort. I have a fireplace in my house that has a backdraft occasionally and smoke gets in the house while burning all sorts of wood, hickory-pine-oak, and the fish have faired OK.

Would your mother know instead of having to aske you dad? And you know your dad better than anyone, maybe its not worth asking at this time while the feelings regarding it are so fresh..

This is like a catch 22. If I bring it up now, it might hurt his feelings. However, if I wait until later he might not remember what he did.

I was going to say that I would seriously doubt that he used any type of accelerator to start the fire, but then remembered him using gasoline to start a BBQ when I was younger. At least he knew to throw the match at the grill from a distance. Then, I also thought this is the guy that doesn't worry too much about a house full of smoke.

I'm going to try to ask him tomorrow if the opportunity presents itself.

Has your dad ever had the chimney cleaned? Birds and bats are known to use chimneys as nesting sites. If they didn't burn the fire all summer and then just started up now I bet there is something in there. Having a fire in the house with a clogged/restricted chimney is beyond dangerous, it moves straight to deadly. If I were you I would have a professional come and look at it. It is highly recommended by all fire departments every few years.

And that was part of the argument between my parents tonight. The fire hasn't been on for at least 2 years, and God only knows when the chimney was cleaned last. Trust me when I tell you this, my father has always been a fly by the seat of his pants kind of guy that learns from his mistakes. Obviously, a house fire isn't what you want to call a learning experience, especially at age 66.

My dad is like my best friend. We do a ton of things together, and he was the one that got me into aquariums even though he always killed his fish. I am trying to be like Switzerland on this one, but nudge my dad in the right direction. I'm thinking about calling a meeting of the siblings and just giving my parents a Christmas present of a wood stove insert PROFESSIONALLY INSTALLED for Christmas. That would solve this entire problem and I could sleep better.
